Public Banking

Join our panel discussion as we explore how public banking can support our small and micro businesses, not just start - but thrive.

We’re thrilled to invite you into a conversation that feels both timely and transformative. This month, we’re digging into a topic that could reshape what’s possible for progressive policy and for the small businesses that keep our communities thriving: public banking.

We hear it all the time — that bold, people-centered policy "costs too much," even though study after study shows the opposite. Our communities save money, generate revenue, and build long-term stability when we invest in people. So what if the barrier isn’t the policy at all, but the financial systems behind it?

Could public banking be the tool that unlocks the future we’ve been fighting for?

Join us for a dynamic discussion with Lyne White-Colin of the AYA Foundation, local business owner and creative Rick Griffith, and the Honorable Juan Marcano, one of Colorado’s strongest public banking advocates. Together, we’ll explore what public banking really is, how it can strengthen small businesses and local economies, and what it would take to make it a reality here in Colorado.

MAM continues to be an active and visible space where community members come together around issues impacting Denver residents, and there is clear interest in having Lisa present to listen, engage, and connect.

“Center-running” design for Colorado Blvd Open House

Colorado Blvd is slated to get Bus Rapid Transit (like light rail on wheels), and it’s the chance to transform the corridor from the grungy, unsafe, miserable semi-highway it is to a people-friendly main street. The options are “Center-running,” where the bus moves in its own lane in the middle of the street (like Colfax is getting), “Side-running,” where the bus moves in its own lane on the sides of the street, or “Mixed Flow,” where the buses move with traffic like they do now.

Right now, leadership at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is signaling support for the “Mixed Flow” option. That’s not real bus rapid transit, it’s just traffic with branding, and it won’t deliver the speed, reliability, or safety this corridor needs. (Plus, they haven’t even heard from the public yet; that’s the point of these open houses…)

On safety, the difference matters. “Mixed Flow” only marginally improves conditions, and as anyone who’s had a near-miss on Colorado Boulevard knows, marginal isn’t good enough. “Mixed Flow” only cuts severe and fatal crashes by up to 15% max, while “Center-running” cuts them by 30%–double the effectiveness of “Mixed Flow.”

Dedicated bus lanes don’t just move transit faster, they make the street safer. Research shows they significantly slow the fastest drivers, dropping top speeds by over 11%, into a range where small differences can mean the difference between severe injury and survival. When you reallocate lanes to transit, you’re not just improving buses, you’re slowing traffic and saving lives. And this is the especially critical part: “BRT-related lane reductions were linked with particularly strong speed reductions; there were 85th-percentile speed reductions of 4.1 mph (12.6%) when general vehicle lanes were removed versus 2.2 mph (7.8%) when lanes were not removed.”

In other words: when you give buses their own lane by taking one from other vehicles, you don’t just improve transit, you slow traffic and save lives.

Now that you know, take action: Attend the open house

  • May 13, 5-7 pm (drop in anytime)

  • Clayton Early Learning Center

You don’t need to prepare anything or stay long, though our comment guide has some pointed questions to ask and a sample comment you can adapt. The most important thing you can do is talk to someone on the project team and say you support the “Center-running” design for Colorado Blvd, with bus-only lanes.

GET THE GUIDE

Use this link to add it to your calendar so I can send you reminders!

This is a key moment.

If we don’t speak up, “good enough” will win, and Colorado Boulevard will stay fast for drivers, slow for transit riders, dangerous, and unreliable for decades. If we show up, we can deliver a corridor that actually works, for transit riders and for safety.

LWV April Briefing: Facts over Fear

For several decades LWV's positions have enabled our organization to advocate on behalf of immigrants' rights and fair, just and dignified treatment under the law. We have partnered with organizations to support DACA-eligible individuals' legal pathways to citizenship. Our Voter Service volunteers have celebrated with New Americans at citizenship ceremonies and offered them voter registration opportunities. Today, LWV is being thwarted in these efforts and has joined in lawsuits that challenge the governmental efforts to threaten and attack our immigrant neighbors even if they are American citizens. One of the most pernicious and damaging trends we are experiencing is that of misinformation, disinformation and even outright lies about our immigrant neighbors. Beyond the information about how to be allies as our city and state have become targets of ICE intimidation and actions, the LWVD Program/Advocacy Committee would like to provide our members and community with factual information about immigrants to counter the myths that underpin justification for anti-immigrant political rhetoric and actions. Our briefing on Tuesday, April 21 will offer a panel of speakers who will highlight the contributions of our immigrant neighbors provide which strengthen our communities and institutions. Among other speakers, we will hear from the Colorado Fiscal Institute and the Spring Institute. Please join us for this final briefing of the year and invite friends. Denver Mountain Parks Tours - Genesee

Join us for our second Denver Mountain Parks tour. This time at Genesee Park. We will be going on an easy, family-friendly hike. We will be on an ADA accessible paved footpath. The hike will include the buffalo overlook. Acquired in 1914, the herd numbers approximately 50 and continues Denver’s conservation and stewardship efforts, and provides a living link to western history. In addition to the bison, Genesee boasts expansive rolling meadows, mountain valleys, and thick pine forests. The Chief Hosa Lodge, designed by one of Denver’s most famous architects, Jules Jacques Benedict, and built of native stone and logs in 1918, is also located in the park. The Lodge was named for Southern Arapahoe Chief Little Raven, whose nickname was Chief Hosa.

We will meet at the red star highlighting the Patrick House. Take exit 253 off I-70. Make a left and drive over I-70 to the road right before Chief Hosa Lodge. You take a left there, so Chief Hosa is on your right. Go down that road until it forks, then take the left fork and proceed to the parking lot. Keep an eye out for the Lisa for Denver banner to find us.
